Clumping cat litter is a popular choice for its convenience and easy cleanup. Made from materials like bentonite clay, it forms solid clumps when exposed to moisture, making it simple to scoop out waste while leaving the rest of the litter clean. This type of litter helps control odors effectively and lasts longer since only soiled portions need to be removed. Many clumping litters are available in scented and unscented options to suit both cats and their owners’ preferences.
Clumping cat litter has a number of benefits including:
Easier cleaning: Clumping litter forms clumps around solid waste, making it simple to scoop out and dispose of. This reduces odour and keeps the litter box cleaner.
Odour control: By removing soiled clumps, you can help prevent odours from spreading.
Efficiency: Clumping litter often uses less overall litter as you only need to scoop out the soiled portions.
In addition, clumping litters are plant based, making them biodegradable and a more eco friendly option compared to clay based clumping litters.
You should always be guided by the manufacturer's recommendations for maintaining and changing clumping cat litter, however as a rule of thumb, clumping litter should be scooped and topped up if needed daily. The entire litter box contents should be changed at least every week or two, although this can vary depending on the number of cats using the litter, the type of litter and the type of litter box being used.
Kittens are naturally curious and may explore their surroundings by playing with or even eating their litter. To avoid potential health risks, avoid using clumping clay or crystal litters. These can cause gastrointestinal problems if ingested. Tofu or paper litters are much safer options for kittens.
When choosing a litter tray, ensure it has low sides that are easy for your kitten to access. This will make it easier for them to use the litter box without feeling overwhelmed. To make the transition smoother, ask the shelter or breeder which type of litter and tray your kitten was using previously. Using the same litter and tray can help your kitten feel more comfortable and familiar in their new home. Cats often dislike change, so continuity can make the adjustment easier. You can always transition to a different litter later once your kitten has settled in.
Any litter that gives off dust can exacerbate respiratory issues in cats. If your cat is sensitive to dust, look for a low dust litter option such as those made from tofu, corn or paper. Avoid using scented litters for sensitive cats too where possible as fragrance may also be irritating to the respiratory tract.
The disposal options for clumping cat litters depend on the type being used. If you are unsure, check the packaging for guidance from the manufacturer. Plant and paper based litters are often biodegradable and can be incorporated into home compost, small amounts may also be suitable for flushing (eg. when scooping daily) however take care with this as there is always a risk of costly plumbing blockages. If you don't have home compost or are using a non biodegradable clumping litter, dispose of soiled litter in a sealed garbage bag and place in your appropriate household waste bin. It is recommended to clean litter trays in a well ventilated area, ideally with gloves and a mask to protect against inhaling dust and other irritants. Special care should be taken by those who are pregnant or have compromised immune systems as there is a (low) risk of transmission of toxoplasmosis. If composted litter is to be used on plants for human consumption, it is important to ensure they are washed thoroughly prior to eating.
